Everyone is invited to join us for a fun gathering at the Kirby Nature Center, where you can catch up with old friends and meet other members of the Corridor! At the meeting, we’ll dive into our goals for 2026 and share the results from our membership survey. Plus, you’ll get updates from our various committees. We’re thrilled to have Carol Trosset as our guest speaker on vernal pools!
Carol grew up in Cincinnati studying natural history as a member of the Cincinnati Zoo’s Junior Zoologist’s Club. She continued to pursue her interest in nature while living in various parts of the country during her career as a social scientist. In Western Massachusetts, she became active in the study and protection of vernal pools and their amphibian residents. Carol has returned to Cincinnati in retirement, and now volunteers for the Zoo and manages the Trosset Wildflower Sanctuary at Gorman Heritage Farm.
Vernal pools are small, usually temporary, bodies of fresh water. They provide critical habitat for many invertebrates and amphibians whose life cycles have an aquatic stage. This presentation will discuss how vernal pools form and how they are used by a variety of animals including the spotted salamander. After reviewing how to build and maintain your own vernal pool, we will visit a pool on the Kirby property and see what wildlife is present there.
